Link Building
Link building is the practice of getting other websites to link in to your site. There are essentially two forms - one way links and reciprocal links. Generally reciprocal links cost nothing, save for the time of finding the reciprocator and inserting the link into your page, whilst the one way links usually come at a cost.
Links improve your ranking on search engines as they tell the search engine that other sites regard your site as important enough to link to. Google provides a Page Rank, being a score between 0 and 10, which indicates the importance of your site based on the number of links.

In deciding how best to establish a link building campaign thought needs to be given to
- The page rank of the site you link to - the higher the better
- The relevance of the site you are linking to - the more relevant (as denoted by genuineness of content and keywords) the better. Relevant links carry more weight than links from high PR sites
- The cost associated with obtaining the link - often a page rank of 7 wont link to a page rank of 1 for free
- The number of sites linking in to your site compared to the number of sites your site links out to - it is important to try and have more sites linking in than you link out to
- Avoiding link farms which are frowned upon by search engines.
